Dogfooding - a can of dog food with definition

The One Question That Separates Real AI Companies from Slideware

I have a one-question filter for AI vendors: "Do you use this yourself?"

Not "can you demo this." Not "do you have a case study." Do you actually run your business on the thing you're selling me?

Most can't say yes. And that tells you everything.

The Demo Gap

They'll show you a slick demo. They'll walk you through someone else's success story. But their own operations? Still spreadsheets. Still manual. Still held together with duct tape and good intentions.

This isn't a minor detail. It's a credibility chasm.

Why Dogfooding Matters

When you build AI for clients but don't use it yourself, you miss the sharp edges. The weird failures at 2 AM. The workflow that looks great on a whiteboard but breaks the moment a real human touches it.

There's a specific kind of knowledge you only get from being your own customer. The documentation never mentions it. The demo doesn't surface it. You have to live in the system daily to find it.

How We Think About It

We run our agency on AI agents. Our content pipeline is managed by an agent. Our ERP connects through an agent. Our client operations lean on the same tools we build for others.

Not because it's a flex — because it's the fastest way to find what breaks before our clients do.

Every bug we hit internally is a bug our clients never see. Every workaround we build for ourselves becomes a feature we ship with confidence.

The Filter

Next time you're evaluating an AI partner, skip the deck. Ask the one question.

If they squirm, you have your answer.
